Braces/spacers questions? Doctors or experienced people only?
I got spacers today and I'm getting braces in about 2 weeks and i have a few questions?
1)do braces hurt more than spacers? Spacers hurt already.
2) if braces do hurt, how long will they?
3) will braces limit my musical abilities? I play the saxophone.
4) when my spacers fall out, does that mean they've done their job? Or is it bad? Should I call my orthodontist?
5) Is it normal to have 5 spacers? I have 5, but none have fallen out yet.
6) when do spacers stop hurting?
7) can I use a mechanical toothbrush with spacers? Or do they fall out?
If you could answer any of these questions I'd really appreciate it! :/ thanks
I am no orthodontist but I got my braces yesterday and already had the spacers. My spacers got taken out yesterday though for the braces
1. The only part of braces that hurt are the rings that the spacers make a space for. They dont hurt nearly as bad as the spacers did. The spacers will hurt more if your teeth contacts are close. Meaning if its really hard for floss to get between your teeth then they might hurt a little more. My teeth are really close together so it hurt more. And no the braces are a breeze its mostly them gluing the brackets on and that doesn't even hurt, either does the wire because it slips right in.
2. My braces have only hurt where the rings are (which is where the spacers used to be.) The rings might not hurt you as bad if the rings don't scrape your tounge. DO NOT MOVE YOUR TOUNGE AROUND TOO FEEL THE RINGS! The metal rings scrape the crap out of the back of your tounge and cheeks.
3. No they shouldn't. I am not for sure so ask your ortho whe you see him. I had no problem being a drummer lolz.
4. If the spacers fall out within the first week or so then you have to call the ortho to have one of the ortho assistants replace them. I had over 6 fall out, some of them fell out more than one time. If they fall out they put thicker spacers in to keep them in place. You will be glad you had the spacers trust me. The spacers make the rings sooo much easier. If they fall out a couple days before don't worry just call and ask the receptionist about it. This happens to every patient and they should be able to tell you or ask the orthodontist.
5. I had eight spacers. You probable have 5 because ther emight already be spaces in some teeth where the rings will go. You will understand everything once the braces are on. The spacers are horrible but you will be glad that you already went through a that pain then the braces pain.
6. Spacers hurt worse the second day I think. The pain really kicked in then. Get a product called oragel for gum and cavity pain. If it weren't for that I would have been in way more pain. The oragel numbs the pain of your gums. You can get any off brand too. Its about $4 or $5 at the walmarts where I live.
7. Be careful not to eat ANY sticky food or sticky candy because they fall out easy. Don't pick at them or push them with your tounge. I would suggest you sleep alot until they are out and you get your braces. It will seem like a long week with the spacers. The braces don't bother me nearly as bad. You can use a mechanical tooth brush but be way more gentle around the spacers and I didn't floss my teeth with the spacers because they will fall out.
I hope I helped and I am really really sorry about the spacers. Don't stress about the braces. It is nothing like getting a filling in your tooth. There is no drill, just gluing and biting down. You seriously will not even know that they are putting your brackets on. Brackets are the metal things that go on each individual tooth that have the colors on them (incase you didn't know.) The brackets don't hurt or the wire. The most uncomfortable part is the rings which is probably the first part. You wont feel pain the first day really. It just takes getting used to. TAKE MY ADVICE AND DON'T RUB YOUR TOUNGE ON THE METAL RINGS IN THE BACK AT ALL!!! I hope I could ease the stress and worries you have. You might think they don't look good but don't worry like no one notices what you do. I am a girl and I almost cried right there in the office when I looked in the mirror since my teeth were not that crooked to start with. They don't look like you see them.
